Oil & Oil consumption
As outlined in my maintenance master list, I had some concern regarding oil consumption in my car, so I started tracking it a bit more closely. It started after a day at the track (The Ridge) when I got the oil warning light on the way home. Having just added a quart about 3 weeks prior, I was a bit concerned, especially considering that since the fuel injectors failed (and two cylinders hydro-locked) those two cylinders are down on compression.
Current average consumption: 1/2 quart every 3,700 miles. Not bad at all. Oil used: Motul Specific, 505 01 / 502 00 5w40 Filters used: Mahle |

After 4,000 miles it looks like I've burned about a quart. BUT - - interesting to have read that several owners see that the RS4 'burns off' oil very quickly when you add above and beyond the mid-point (which I did last time). So, I actually think it's burning only about a 1/2 quart every 4k miles (which would be perfectly normal), but I'll keep monitoring to make sure. I don't need to add yet, but I expect in the next 1k miles I will.

Ho Lee Fuk!!!
In all my analness of maintaining my car, I somehow managed to miss a complete cycle of changing oil....gulp. I thought it was when I did HP upgrade, but looking back, I never did it then. Fuck. So....
Mileage since last change: 11,411. FUCK!!! I'm sending it in to Blackstone to see what they see...curious about the results, but not all surprised when they tell me it's totally fuel diluted. Oh well, live and learn. I sent in a sample to Dlackstone. Not surprisingly, here's the full result. Commentary: Well, the news isn't great, but there have been bleaker samples than this. Aluminum and iron read the farthest out of line compared to averages, which are based on ~4,900 miles for this engine type. Aluminum shows piston wear, and iron comes from steel parts. You noted poor compressions on 2 cylinders, and that may be related. Averages are based on stock engines, and since this Audi is
supercharged, it probably won't wear exactly like averages anyway. The fuel/viscosity aren't major issues, and the TBN is plenty high. Try a normal interval & check back. I'll send in another sample after the next oil change and we'll see how different the analysis is / is not. |

Made sure I didn't go more than 5k miles on this one, and sent in another sample to Blackstone (full pdf here). A bit more optimistic this time:
Wear metals are better here after the shorter oil run. The lower iron makes sense because that metal tracks with miles on the oil. And lower aluminum is nice to see. (It doesn't track directly with miles on the oil like iron does.) Of course, we can't dismiss iron as this level still shows more wear at steel parts than average. The high wear could be related to the low compressions, but it's hard to say for sure since chrome (from the rings) is perfect. No fuel this time and the viscosity is on the mark for 5W/40. Run 5,000 miles again for an apples-to-apples comparison. |

Went 6,102 miles this time around, a bit more than I wanted to. Not doing a sample this time around. Added about 1.75 quarts over those 6k miles.

Changed with just over 3,500 miles on the oil just because I had the car in for other stuff.. Went with Motul vs Liqui Moly....because that's what was available.
